Many homeowners — especially new ones — may not be aware that the filter in their forced-air furnace needs to be replaced every three months or so. This needs to be done to keep the furnace running efficiently and allows it to filter pollutants effectively.
Thankfully replacing furnace filters is generally very simple. You just need to purchase the correct size for your furnace and install it in the correct orientation and you’re set! Follow these simple steps and you’ll be on your way to fresher air.
Step 1
What type of filter do you have? Make sure to turn off your furnace first; then remove the existing filter which will either be in a return air vent or the furnace itself. The filter should have an arrow indicating air flow direction, make note of this direction; you can even use a marker to draw an arrow directly on the furnace itself. Take note of the filter dimensions, as there are many standard sizes.
Step 2
Purchase the replacement. Filters are sold at home centers, hardware stores, and online. Disposable ones are typically 1 or 2 inches thick. There are generally many grades of filters available, so purchase the best one within your budget, they are pretty affordable for the most part.
Step 3
Install the new filter. Look for the indicators that tell you which side of the filter should face the furnace. Then slide or drop the filter back into place and replace the cover that goes over it (if there is one). Make sure to jot down the date so that you’ll know when it’s time to change the filter again.
